japan eats

a collection of the food i ate in 14 days in japan. see also the post on omakase sushi, and the bakery at tabata. food in japan isn't cheap; it's easily SGD15 per meal. but it's easily better than anything in singapore, whichever shop you walk into.
this was my first meal in japan. couldn't understand the menu. simply asked for familiar things like ramen, tempura, and got a tempura udon eventually.
a teriyaki PORK burger from macdonald's. it was so good!
a restaurant where you buy a food coupon from the vending machine and give it to the cooks. i hadn't known what to do at all, and one of the cooks was so helpful. she came out from her counter to tell me what buttons to press for what items.
some hot chocolate from aux bacchanales, while waiting for the JPO concert.
found the cheapest yakiniku. JPY250 only.
found the ootoya at ginza. it was way cheaper than in singapore. but just as good and homely.
a takeaway bento. it was a cold night, and i walked quite far before i got back, so this was definitely not hot anymore. but it was still so delicious.
dinner spread at suirinsou, the inn i stayed in when i was at hakone.
breakfast i the dining hall at suirinsou.
a curry rice at hakonemachi, one of the places where the pirate ship stopped, around ashinoko.
another dinner at suirinsou.
a black egg from owakudani (great boiling valley). the egg turns black because it is boiled in the sulphurous pools at owakudani.
a starbucks lunch. this is a marron roll, don't think there is any in singapore.
a big mac meal, after a long day travelling across the country on the shinkansen.
on the way down from kiyomizu, found a cream puff shop.
and a beef bun shop. the girl knew where singapore is, and said japan winter must be really cold for me.
mister donut from the kyoto station hub. this was to fill my hunger before i embarked on a long walk to find the mos burger near shijo.
after a very long walk, i found the mos burger, and ate a 土产 burger. the piece of pork belly in it is SO juicy. there is even grainy mustard on it.
a rice bowl with chopped raw tuna, and coddled egg. a bit odd for breakfast.
bought a chocolate tart from a 7-11 and it was good.
the chicken tatsuta from macdonald's.
ventured out to find myself a sushi dinner. i google-translated the common items and wrote them on a piece of paper. then i brought it to the shop and let them see it, and got most of what i wanted!
a day out with jessica at shibuya, harajuku and ikebukuro, and we ate so many times. first, a small restaurant with simple rice sets. then, a tiny ramen shop, which was SO GOOD, particularly because it had been raining all day. and finally a cup of hot chocolate at some cafe.
zuoen's student yayoi brought us to a buffet place in shinjuku to eat sukiyaki/shabushabu. i like shabushabu more - the sukiyaki stock is too sweet.
a donut from lawson station.
eating at bubby's, one of the restaurants at ark hills. this was before the vadim repin concert. the bacon burger was dripping with fat and so juicy. and for dessert, the waiter kept pointing to the poster on the door for this strawberry custard pie - not on the menu, it is a christmas special - and kept saying 'very good!'
海老 is prawn. hmm. this place had the food coupon vending machine too. so i knew what to do.
okonomiyaki from outside sensoji, a big temple at asakusa. the problem is, there are no dustbins in public in japan. i held on to this for some time until i found a toilet.
met yayoi and we went to a butler cafe for some sweet stuff. beautifully plated but exhorbitantly expensive. then a dinner at ootoya at shinjuku! she was so nice that she bought me cupcakes when we went to shinjuku isetan. i bought a pierre herme tart. and this was simply too much desserts to eat, so i shared with zuoen.
a macdonald's breakfast muffin. double patties, a softly set egg (NOT like singapore's), cheese, and BACON.
krispy kreme spotted at odakyu shinjuku. this was after a long morning at meiji-jingu, and walking from harajuku to shinjuku.
a dinner at some eatery in komagome. chinese ramen, with gyoza.
meat yazawa, highly recommended by zuoen, and supposedly has long queues. but i got there early enough to be the first, 40 minutes before they opened! and the queue did get long very quickly.
just had to try one of these, when i saw them at odaiba, carrying a lot of shopping bags.
one final ootoya meal, at ginza.
i must remember to go back to this mochi place. at a corner of the junction where mistukoshi is. the strawberry mochi is so big and when u bite in, the strawberry is so sweet and juicy. NOT like in singapore. ok, singapore has them in japanese supermarkets, very expensive too.
one late night, zuoen went out to buy suppeer and got me eclairs. they were so niceee, even had vanilla seeds in the pastry cream.
for my last meal, zuoen brought me to a tonkatsu place at komagome. it was SO GOOD, and so much cheaper than ton-kichi. really, it is shocking that a small family restaurant can deliver food of such standard. and here we are in singapore getting ripped off.
opened the box of fukusaya castella in singapore. this brand was recommended by yayoi. it was moist and delicious. somehow it was like the cake was soaked in honey syrup, but only at the top and bottom, and somehow the honey syrup seemed to stay there. will buy this again if i go again.

the bakery at tabata station

there is a bakery when you just come out of tabata station, called FlavorField. it is a dream, truly. i bought the bread at every chance possible.
i LOVED this chocolate cream horn. the cream was so thick and good...
these cute buns with a 田 imprinted are the 'signature'? because tabata is 田端. it is filled with a chunky red bean paste, and some cool fatty whipped cream.
this is believe is their 人气 #1. a chicken cutlet in a bun.
