cursive: pie
this was the fourth attempt at the cherry pie recipe from the CIA book. the first three were made in the cold december of 2007. the first pie was a daring experiment that took place at corfe place, and it was on the last day of the national piano and violin competition, where i watched a paganini concerto.
this time i used canned cherries. no need to wash, cut, de-seed them anymore. i used the juice in the filling as well, but forgot to reduce the sugar, so it became very sweet.
i used dorie's good for almost everything pie dough (my wholemeal version), because otherwise i would never finish the doughs in my freezer. and i went for wide lattice strips because they required less effort for weaving, and because i thought they looked more retro.
into the oven. this pie crust gave out a lot of oil during the baking, which kept oozing and dripping out of the edges.
i made my own foil strips to cover the edges of the pie so that they wouldn't get burnt. i just don't understand why we naturally go to such lengths to protect a baking pie like it's a baby.
you can see the burnt oil drippings forming a circle of dots around the pie plate on the baking sheet. they were cute, in a retro way, like the wide lattice strips. so this was my sister's birthday cherry pie.
this year i don't get cake on my birthday, but i got a fat slice of cedele carrot cake one week ago. nothing wrong with that, it's just... my birthday never gets celebrated on the actual day - always in advance, except the 2007 one. but it doesn't matter, because the fact is, we always grow older each day. and so today i did more housework, moving tables, getting a downgrade from my picket & rail table to an ikea table because the computer is getting an upgrade, cleaning the walls, etc.
i think the point is, when we're older, birthdays no longer hold that magical substance as they do in a kid's eyes anymore. or rather, the adults don't think they hold magic for us anymore.
